To answer you question Simon there are loads of alternatives. I suppose with all oils it is all about how much you are prepared to pay. Historically we used to use good old GTX for derv due to its additional cleaning properties. Lucas oils for a bit, however, i recall it being pretty inconsistent and then Coolpower in all its many variations - some proved to be more durable while others were simply kack and resulted in some serious damage. Motul 300v was probably the most popular alternative for a while as it lasted for ages and didn't burn. We would run motors in on Coolpower and then run 10 hours plus between Motul changes. It isn't cheap but lasted significantly longer and didn't cause carbon build up which was perfect when we ran the volumised head rule that was crap. Something like this or Mobile 1 would be perfect of racking up the laps.
