What Brian means is to rub the bore at ROUGHLY 45 degrees right round the bore and then finish it with rubbing round the whole thing at 45 degrees reversed. The lines of the rubbing will cross at 90 degrees to make a cross which it 45 degrees canted over. The idea is that you rub until the 'stains' begin to disapper and then rub in the other direction until they've gone. In that way, you will have de-glazed the bore and left the cross hathcing just like it was after the previous engine rebuikd.

The concept is that it gives a surface into which the oil can be 'trapped' and allow the piston to travel on the oil-'bed'.
