Hi Nigel.
I've not looked at the Ven 05 in the flesh but here's a PDF which seems to show it:-
http://www.lsrmotorsports.com/PDF/VEN+05++Brake+System.pdf
Having raced one of the first 'disk' systems (as I am sure you did, too), the first thing I notice is the MASSIVE over construction of the disk! I simply do NOT believe that any non-gearbox kart needs a brake disk THAT cooled or THAT massive!!
My (our) first disk was the thickness of ONE of those conjoined disks and I simply do NOT remember it over-heating. Looking at the Magura... they don't seem to think that's a problem, either! It looks like a LOT of 'perceived performance....'
I can't quite see how a top hat system prevents the 'problems' with 'pins' other than the fact that the top hats are really larger diameter pins with a fancy appearance.
In reality, the dislike of the 'bag of nails' sound is just me being pedantic: it doesn't affect the perfomance and, if I was con sistent in my arguments, I'd usually say it doesn't matter. I just don't like the 'sound' of something rattling on ANY performance vehicle.... hence my loathing of air-cooled Porsches!
Ian
