The split is a possible problem. When tightening the sprockets use all of the bolt holes, however, place the chain on the spocket and apply a bit of tension (get someone to simply hold it taught). Take your time tightening the bolts. Nip them up first and do so in diagonal order and then tighten fully in the same order.

Mount on the engine and test. Now it could still be that the chain has been stretched ( and please don't be tempted to use worn sprockets) however, this will eliminate any issue around a split sprocket
