Sealed engines that don't start out and or end up equal are just as pointless, but there is a 3rd way. Have carefully 'equalised' pool engines for high level racing. Then perhaps set-up and driver ability would count.
How many more people would do FKS or S1 if they knew they could turn up and be guaranteed as good an engine as anyone else. Karting could continue to find and progress the best young drivers, rather than following the current trend, perfected in France, of finding the best rich and or well connected drivers. The Gene pool is so much smaller that the level of talent will start to decline. It's no coincidence that the French have no decent high level drivers anymore, the UK needs to be proactive to stop it happening there.
With pool engines Clubs could sponsor promising drivers to race at high level for minimal cost. Scholarships could be given by businesses etc. etc.
