Preparation is everything!
I don't think there is a requirement for 'SP' motors. To compete at the highest level. Mine most definately aren't. I do have the advantage or disadvantage of a unique chassis.
So I think the fact when I bother to race, that I'm on the pace with what in theory is less power than a lot of the competition, suggests that SP's aren't all there cracked up to be!
I think the point is that, it is perceived that's it impossible to be successful with out them. I think people are wrong to beleive that!
Lard made some valid points, the other points were maybe weren't helpful. In general karting with Honda GX's is quite cheap and it's not just cheque book racing like some other classes get accused of.
I'd say if you have the money to burn, buy them. If not a 'standard tune' is adequate. The issus have been in prokarting since day one in the days of the overbores they same issues cropped up. I used to race with team that had a pair from Ilmor via Paul Bowler that cost £1200
