Hi All, I have popped some new rings in my lads GX160, glaze busted the bore, done nothing else to it. When we came to start it, the compression was right up (as it should be). Started it up and there was a noticeable difference in the exhaust note so we sent him on his way telling him to take it easy for a while. We have probably put about an hours running in on the motor before I told him to start opening it up more. To cut a long story short, by the time he started to put some fast laps in, we were down 8 seconds a lap - 8 b****y seconds! I know the engine is probably still a little tight but 8 seconds? Previously, it had a GX200 head gasket in but I have gone back to a standard gasket - the compression was definitely better once it was done so what's wrong? The only thing that I can think of is the cam timing but I know it is 100% correct - i.e. the two dots line up - the only thing that I can think of is that the previous owner had the timing a tooth different, could this be the case? FYI, the engine runs fine, I set the tappets, we're on a 72 jet and a change of emulsion tube made it worse, ignition timing is standard (as it was before); there also appears to be more bottom end power since the rings have been changed. Any suggestions please?
