I always thought it was standard practice to remove the exhaust box and check for rattles.
At Llandow, Chief Scrut. John Goddard always checks the engines of the top three prokarts after the final sprint. Part of the examination was the removal and shaking of the exhaust box. If it rattled the advice was always the same. 'Get it fixed or replaced before the next meeting.' Simples.
