The honest answer is I don't really know. I would guess it is a throw back to endurance racing, however, it is probably another reason why the class remains so popular in the region whilst it has all but died from the MSA scene.
I know that we previously ran 3x20lap heats and a 25lap final = 85 laps which is the same as PFI do now. The current format falls short of this at a total of 63 laps racing, however, this format change happened a few years ago and I can't remember why save for some of our less fit drivers not being able to drive for 20 mins!! Also the current format is consistent with the series that Tockwith used to run when they had grids in teh mid 20s.
But we must be doing something right as 60 odd prokarts were racing in the North East this weekend. It is probably why our grid has remained strong over the years and one of the many reasons why we are seening acomplished Rotax drivers and new to karting drivers moving to our class.
