In my opinion the engines are much closer than they used to be. But the difference between a good, well prepared, but loose, race engine and an old, perhaps down on compression engine is enormous. Count in seconds. But between a good engine and a parts selected engine only a few tenths that only the best drivers will find.
With all due respect, you won't see that much difference in engines track side, you are seeing the differenece in driver experience and set up. Last year both my boys (8-10) were in the same class, both had over a years experience and I always gave the youngest the best engine. Yet he never got closer than 2 tenths to the eldest and was sometimes a second or more off.
My advice, would be to go for a good 'normal' race engine now, when your lad is fighting for wins and only needs a few tenths to be there, invest in a parts selected engine.
