50mm Axles go from 1000mm to 1040mm in length, and range from extra soft to extra hard in flexibility.

A rule of thumb is that to gain grip you will use a shorter rear track (rear width) and/or a harder axle, and in the wet you are generally trying to get as much rear grip as possible, so yes a shorter, harder axle is considered better for the wet. In the dry however you will most likely want less grip, so a longer, softer axle will be better, but only as long as you move the hubs out for a wider rear track.

For changing axles, sliding one out and the next one in is the way most people do it.

Hope this helps!
