IAME is a great engine, however they do not like idling on the grid and do not like going slow. Also jetting is a bit of an art, but you may be ok with this having had a TKM. This is where Honda tends to suit novices as they are happy ticking over all day and pretty much bomb proof.
My advice to anyone starting out and wanting to have fun is to have as much "bum in seat" time as possible while Dad just adds fuel. On a 2stroke after you have had a few spins, broke the starter pull cord, had a carb go down on you etc, it starts to remove the fun element pretty quickly for both you and your son.
That said get yourself up to your nearest club and see what the majority are doing as it also not a lot of fun for your boy if he's the only one on a particular engine.
