You could get a feel for the trials and tribulations of running a TKM at www.kartingdad.co.uk, it's a blog maintained by one of the other dads at Clay Pigeon who came into the sport knowing absolutely nothing.
You're right in one respect, owning your own kart will take up a lot more of your time and possibly money than A&D racing. You'll either love it or be sent screaming back to DMax! there's a reasonable amount of infrastructure required, for example somewhere to store/maintain the beast, transport, tools etc. It needn't be too much but you do need a certain amount of space and family support. If that's not forthcoming, A&D 2-stroke works very well.
As ITPro says, get along to some race meetings and get involved first of all. And never, ever forget its meant to be fun!
