An interesting article. What's wrong with engaging in a pastime for the sake of enjoyment? I think karting is a stepping stone for a few sufficiently wealthy drivers each year but for the majority of people it's an enjoyable hobby. Being blunt, none of our kids are ever going to F1. Even Mr fat wallets kid probably isn't going to get to F1, although it would make me chuckle to see the surname fat wallet on the tv graphics. But, seriously, how many msa license holders fill out the application form each year with the intention of pursuing a career in F1? What's wrong with karting for the sake of karting? I've tried numerous times to get my lad to take up football, fishing, cricket, bmx, skating, snooker, mountain biking you name it but he loves driving his kart. The majority of sportsmen are not paid professionals but amateurs. Why should karting be any different? The difference with karting (or any Motorsport for that matter) is you need a fair bit of kit which is expensive by comparison to a pair of football boots or a hockey stick. F1 is actually remarkably easy to get to - you just need Ł20M and a kid who wants to do it with a supportive family. As the article says, it pretty much puts you in a class of one. Simples.
