Even if your engine is low on compression it will still run of a fashion just down on power. Its difficult to judge compression just by putting your finger over the plug hole unless its completely ******,and a fresh engine needs running in.The symptoms you describe sound like the carb is "dumping", the needle isnt seating properly and is flooding the engine with fuel. Ive never had much success with cleaning and re-fitting. For reliability I always fitted a new Tryton needle and seat from Zip. You will need to check the pop-off pressure with a tester and adaptor. There is a very good clip on youtube by Tommy Motorsport on how to re-build the carbs. Check the pop-off several times before re-assembly just to be sure the needle is seating. Its not essential to keep re-kitting the carb with gaskets as long as the diaphragm has not gone saggy/stretched. A pop off tester is a good investment as is a flywheel/ clutch puller tool. The coil and "black box" that produce the spark are behind the flywheel which is located under the pull start cover. I dont know any way of testing these other than swapping known parts from another engine one at a time to see which has failed. They are not cheap and can let go without warning, although sometimes when they are starting to break down the temperature can rise for no reaon even if you richen the mixture. The clip on the end of the plug lead needs a good connection and can become corroded too. A spare engine and carb are a good idea if you can afford it as if any thing fails your day is over. Favourites include a broken starter, stripped plug thread, broken clutch and the two you have encountered. If you are just starting out/testing you could run the old Tillotson carb, not as fast but reliable and purchased used for peanuts. Engines will be cheap now that Comer has an uncertain future. I have an engine that has done 45 minutes since its last rebuild just to run it in sat doing nothing. Whatever you buy try it first and remember, if you stick with it you will be moving class in a few years so dont blow all your money in cadet. From someone enjoying junior TKM much more than kiddie kart.
