With so much choice why would someone pour what is effectively classed as "cooking oil" into their engine in order to "improve" on the Shell M.

Presumably the growing number of manufactures on that list have all used Shell M as their benchmark and worked on the basis that if they are going to bother to get their oil approved and to market then they may as well make it better.... or have I missed something?
