And you think KF is any different (or Rotax for that matter)? You've now got to fork out +£3k for an engine or hire one at £1,500 or whatever the going rate is. You'll still need to test plenty of exhausts, carbs etc, but you'll also have to maintain batteries, starters, clutches, balance gears, water pumps, looms, ignition switch, make sure you don't lose the key(!) etc, etc, etc. Oh, and they still need rebuilding regularly.
The saving grace of the Rotax package is that it's now pretty reliable and an engine can be competitive enough out of the box.
Karting certainly had to move on from what we had, but I don't think many people will say what we have now is better. What we have now is heavier, slower and more expensive.
The less bits are on a kart, the less scope the money boys have for going faster and the cheaper it is to compete.
