I have often heard this " retard for top end / advance for bottom end" stuff.......and I don't believe it!!! At 15,000rpm there is half as much time available for combustion to happen as there is at 7,500rpm, so it seems obvious to me that you should advance for top end. This was born out when I adapted a motoplat so that by pulling a lever on the steering wheel I retarded the timing - which killed the top end (it was on a Parilla SS20). My experimentation over the years has proved that it is better to err on the side of too advanced, than too retarded, as slightly too retarded hits power much more than slightly too advanced. Notwithstanding all of that though, the TAG engine is a bit of an oddball, which electronically restricts the high rpm power (or is it revs?), presumably by altering the timing, and so you would need to know whether it achieves this by advancing or retarding the timing before deciding on the best course of action.
