isnt the advance of the spark determined by the engine speed also?

i.e. a faster speed will build the voltage in the coils sooner and hence the plug sparks earlier. so, the detrimental effect you have in mind wont be as detrimental as you think.

you want the 'best possible power' to give you the best lap time anyway, not just at high revs.
