It's ridiculous! Everything else in the country is trying to cut costs yet the MSA are making karting even more expensive by bringing in a class that a kid could go into in January and be uncompetitive by March, running equipment they then can't use anywhere else!!
I did two seasons of ICC Long Circuit, I'll break down the costs:
7 race entries per season: £180 a race, £1260; 2 sets of slicks per season: £240; 20 litres of petrol per meeting @115p per litre: £160 for the season; 2 sets of wets per season (we got off lucky) £300. Travelling Costs: £150-£200. Eating at the circuit: £100 per season; Engine maintenance per season: £600 (dad did the work himself); £2860 for the first season.
Second season, only did six races, bought one set of slicks and wets all year (re-using the previous seasons tyres) and took our own food to save money.
£1080 on six entries; £120 slicks; £150 wets; £140 fuel; £150 travelling; £450 maintenance; £2090.
If it hadn't been for my grandmother paying my entries in the second season, I wouldn't have been racing. I finished 2nd in both championships, taking it to the final round of the year both seasons, beaten by drivers who have now won the 125 Open championship the last two years.
Karting doesn't have to cost a ridiculous amount, but the MSA aren't helping, and quite frankly, if you're spending that much on Cadet karting, you're an idiot!!
