It's not the expense so much though, as the knock on effect of this. i.e. even if you pay the price and win a national championship, what have you achieved. You haven't beaten the best drivers, just the richest.
I've been at both ends of this, my lad won French National competitions in 2008. Only because of my own particular expertise I was able to give him top equipment for relatively little money, but at least two of the class contenders that year I know spent 30k+ trying to win and didn't. Although of course it's nice to win, but I got no great satisfaction from knowing whether or not he was the best driver or just the best equiped. I still don't.
But when he won the 'County' level 1000m, 50m hurdles and high jump last weekend. I know who's the best and so does everyone else. Nature of the beast I suppose.
