The longer the chain that you can use, the longer it will last. For sake of argument, if it is a 100 link chain, it will only circulate half as often as a 50 link chain, so will last twice as long because the links are doing half the amount of work. So in reality, if it is a choice between a 100 link and a 98 link chain, the 100 link chain will last around 2% longer (on average of course).
