I feel your pain (quite literally) as I cracked one and bruised some more about 3 weeks back. Second time I've damaged them in this (my first) season.
I was going to go for a Freem rib protector next (still might), but was wearing a Tillett Ribtec when I did my most recent injury.
I'd echo the stuff about having a tight and well fitting seat, but would also say make sure your kart is "releasing" rather than hopping, especially at the back end. My most recent rib problems were caused by me being stupid and pushing on for a lap time when I knew the kart was bouncing all over the place (I was even using lots of kerb...). If I had the slightest sense I would have gone back in and sorted out the handling issues, but instead I carried on until I hurt myself. What a prat!
