The stress on the engine mountings are also reduced when angled forward as the direction of load via the chain pulls the engine slightly downwards against the mount whereas mounted flat the bolts are in full shear. Add thiss factor to the cooling and exhaust flow advantages outlined by Ian and you probably have the answer.
