Well just to give a 12th opinion...;)
Thanks for all the advice, and actually I don't think there's much apart from useful discussion here. The clutch side seal of my TAG engine was clearly worn, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't leaking. Changed it anyway. The ignition side has been left alone as it looks like a pretty meaty seal in good nick and will last to the next rebuild (fingers crosssed, changed them both when I last did the mains last rebuild). Bottom end has already done 8 hours, but had a problem at 5 hours that means the top end is mainly quite fresh.
The mains are a very good fit on the crank, but they develop play in the bearing in the itself at a rate I'm not used to. They're a C3 to start with, but feel like a C4 within a few hours. But never have any of the imminenet rumbles that worry me, and certainly won't let the piston hit anything. I probably need to use waterprrof grease rather than oil on the seals to help stop water ingress in the wet.
Thanks for all the advice and benefit of experience - I know some of it seems opposing - but as itpro says, it really isn't. Just tempered by different experiences.
