I used to use something like this http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Hand+Tools/Engineering+Tools/Engineers+Scriber/d10/sd190/p76054 with the bent bit cut down a little for camshaft/crank shaft seals etc. I don't use one now as I only ever change the seals when I change the main bearings inbetween full rebuilds. I've never (touch wood) had a seizure on any of my engines and I do engine work for a few TKM lads plus my son. I certainly wouldn't worry about doing it every meeting it's not neccessary IMO and experience. But, as itpro says, they're not that expensive so if it concerns you, knock yourself out!
