I believe the future will be 4 stroke rotary engines. It will be driven by environmental issues - 2 stroke motors are seen as being environmentally unfriendly and have been all but outlawed on the road. Rotax will likely take us there with the introduction of an inexpensive, reliable motor that has an even longer interval between rebuilds. Woelfe Engineering and TKM are just too small to be able to compete with the development and marketing capabilities of BRP. Factor in the enormous worldwide dealer and customer base that BRP already have and its a no brainer really.
Until then karting will be running the FR125 family.
Rotax are now the Microsoft of karting. We may dislike them, sometimes for understandable reasons, but we can't deny that they underpin the sport worldwide. The alternatives are niche and pocketed these days.
