Remember the FR125 came about to address a number of major issues. Its introduction was a step change to karting and given the installed base, there's little reason for people to migrate anywhere else... evidenced by what's happened with the KF classes. Remember all the stuff about inequality, cheating etc... have always been in karting - the fact its still there and there's only one engine means that BRP will be the direction in which we'll vent our anger.
Back to threats to Rotax... the only concept I can see that could pose any is something like the AIXRO. Its faster, even more reliable and not being a 2/, its 'greener'. However aside from the cost of the kit, Woelfe Engineering don't have the marketing capabilities of BRP and the AIXRO is not solving enough problems to warrant a mass exodus from the Rotax classes - yet.
Realistically the biggest threat to the current Rotax formulae will be something BRP release - maybe an AIXRO-esq motor ?
