Well my info comes from "Two-stroke Performance Tuning" by A. Graham Bell p140
"Because of the effects of the octane enhancing additives in todays high octane unleaded fuels on the pump and metering diaphragms they require regular replacement, often after each race meeting."

I know it doesn't say to drain the carb to preserve the diaphragms but I figure it may work. Who knows?
I guess the way forward is to replace the diaphragms on a regular basis. How regular is the $64000 question. Every race meeting if Mr Bell is to be believed :-)
