about half an inch of play is about right

too tight and the chain can over heat and you will lose some power

too slack and it might start to whip a bit or fall off.

using the largest radii gears should reduce power loss as the chain isnt turned as tightly but then the length of chain will be more.

a lighter chain would be more efficient but generally they wont last as long.

and make sure your sprockets are aligned well.


the big one is to avoid tho is a tight chain.
