Going back to my only post on this, here's OUR experience,i say OUR because i was just the mechanic/pusher
Way back in the late 90's coming to the end of a very unsucessfull 2nd season in super4,finishing 25th out of 28 in nearly every race,BUT in only our 3rd season in karting, having jumped straight into gearbox. We went to one of the tuners/race teams and asked the cost of an engine for next season,to our suprise we were offered the chance to buy the very same engine that his driver and the champ leader was using, not his 3rd or 4th spare but 'THE ONE' ,we ordered a new chassis from him too.Now we didn't get the engine after the final of the last round but a few weeks later after a full rebuild along with a new chassis. The following season we did S4 again and we could not finish out of the top 6 in the heats and finals all season if we tried, the engine WAS a 'MONSTER' the driver said, loved it,best motor ever.Yes we got a number,a low one too, very low!
When drivers pay teams £1500 per weekend, per season to be run they EXPECT to be quicker than the next guy EVEN if that guy is a customer of said team,I WOULD,otherwise its a waste of money.
BUT...after sending the same engine back for rebuilds and for the latest tweeks to be done it never got any quicker,if anything it went backwards, even with that better barrel, never got our original 'MONSTER' barrel back, wonder why!
SO,we had a quick motor.....but it didn't stay quick, work the rest out yourselves!
