Mike
Welcome to the best mid life crisis you can have. I started a year ago in your position, fortunately, I found some people who gave advice and that went a long way to keeping me on the right path.
Dont worry about asking questions, the only stupid question is the one that you did not ask just before the engine went bang.
I use a small diameter tall measuring jug for my oil, its less affected by the slope of the table.
Buy your fuel in exact quantitys, 5 litres - 100ml of oil. I try and mix the oil in the beaker with some fuel and keep doing it until the oil is all gone from the beaker. Then give the fuel can a good shake.
When doing your fuel, cleanliness is all important. Keep the containers clean and filter the fuel into the tank.
You do need a Mychron or a Alfano, if only to keep an eye on the temp of the engine. If your engine was below 45 degrees yesterday, it would not be running too good either.
On the plugs, Possibly run a Denso 24 in the very cold, normally a 27.
Hope this helps a bit, I'm sure others will add to this.
Good luck
