Hi

I think they keep a positive pressure in the system and as long as there is a gap there or they are not compressed by fluid when you fill the system there is room for expansion when the fluid expands from heat.

If you overfill they will compress to accomodate thew extra fluid level but then as the fluid gets hot and expands, the pressure will increase and apply your pads all the time hence the lack of brakes but once it cools back in the pits it all works again
