All you need to do is ask the old guys.... like me.... who raced without pods.... and even before full-length side-bars. We also raced with fully exposed front and rear wheels.
Did we hit each other? You bet! However, with a little practice, the 'man in front' could deal with a persistent rear-end 'shovee'. All you had to do was to move about 2 feet left or right and the driver behind, who was determined to ram your rear bumper, met the spinning, exposed rear tyre/wheel...… which lifted their front end off the track (while forcing yours into even better contact). They didn't repeat the same tactic on the following lap, I can tell you.
Nerfing (hitting) from the side was also highly risky for the perpetrator on the basis that there was a fair chance there would be a clash of wheels/tyres. Side nerfing wasn't safe for the perpetrator …… just like it's not safe in ANY open wheel racing...… and not a lot of it happens compared to within karting. Without side pods/bars..... you had to be pretty insane to make side contact because you could not tell where you'd end-up!
The modern, Tupperware coated, kart is most similar to fairground 'bumper-cars' and that is now what we have..... fast bumper-karts.
Us old guys have been warning about this for YEARS...… I've been complaining since the original square side pods were introduced into Junior kart..... decades ago. We've ended up EXACTLY where we oldies warned that we would.
Karting (in the business sense) is about money. The powers-that-be are controlled by the suppliers of karts and karting equipment. Selling damageable parts makes money...… so..... add more damageable parts for a quick profit. This isn't complicated!
