Also, once you've checked the tightness of the steering column bolt, wrap some electrical tape around the boss so that when not if the bolt shears, you will still have control of the kart.
As a beginner, the first time it happens you will not be prepared a a penny bit of tape can save you pain and pounds.
If it's a Tony type chassis, think about fitting another steering column collar on top as well as below as it helps transfer thrust away from the bottom chassis mounting and inducing cracking.
Go over your kart with a cleaning cloth from front to back between heats as you can identify anytHing loose while you clean.
Remember to lube the chain each heat and refuel with OIL in the mix, it's easy to forget when you're in a flap.
It's worth making a list of things to do as a routine, then if someone engages you in conversation while you're prepping the kart, you can just quickly run through it..
