Well I can only pass on some our experiences of just what an axle can do to performance.
We had a new chassis, I won't mention the manufacturer, but we couldn't get it to work as delivered.
Took it to Rye with a van load of axles of all makes, hardness and length.
Changed them, tried them, came up with a result that had the kart handling as we wanted it to.
We had tried everything else by the way.
Story: Whilton Mill and kart is handling like aa dog with a missing leg. Suspect cracked chassis, nope, checked everything, changed a few things, hubs etc, still crap. Took out the spacer rings we were using on the rear hubs to make adjustment easy, cured fault, put them back, lame dog.
The plastic spacers, although not actually physically attached to anything, were giving the effect of lengthening the axle by some 20mm and sitting the rear of the kart down.
Changing the position of tubes does affect how the chassis performs and some drivers seem to be able to feel it and others don't.
I have novices who give you great feedback when you change things without telling them and others will just drive around and not notice if you've even pumped the tyres up! You know which ones will be good.
So long as they enjoy it, in the great scheme of things I don't suppose it really matters.
