I agree that there is nothing wrong with a correctly fitted barrel nut however using them is still a potential pre or even worse post race scruitineer fail under MSA regs. The fact that you were not pulled may be down to luck.
However as you indicate in your post having 2 threads showing through a nut is a good thing which brings us back to the very reason the barrel nuts were outlawed in the first place. The inability to visually check that there was at least the diameter of the stud actually locating the wheel at each fixing point.
And yes Colin would have probably been firing up the grinder as would Martin H. RIP the both of them.
