It was to do with the fuel being pushed to the side of the carb and thus only one float is in contact with the arm. If one float is more buoyant than the other you could be running richer through left handers than right handers (or vice versa depending on which float is sitting lower).

Probably makes no difference in reality unless you're on something exceptional such as Southbank at Teesside.
