There's a theory that 'as much as half a horsepower' is 'wasted' by the charging circuit for the battery. Thats 365 watts of power.

This seems to be based on the idea that the starter draws up to 300 amps maximum current during starting and people have been seen cranking their engines for a total of 30 seconds so 300*12*30=108000 watts drained from the battery and replaced over an average of 5 minutes=108000/300 =360 watts replacement rate.

Forget the fact that I cannot see our little starter drawing 300 amps and 360 watt charge would be 30 amps going into a battery with a sub 1 amp maximum recommended charge!

But someone somewhere won a race unexpectedly and put it down to the fact that his battery terminals fell off and people have been doing it ever since.
