My way of doing it is to lie the chain out on its side in a straight line and count the number of outer plates down one run. If there is one at right angles at the far end count it as 1/2 a plate. Multiply by 4 and you've got the number of links in the chain. (i.e. if you count 26.5 outer plates you have a 106 link chain) It's surprisingly quick and easy.
