If karts arrive at a tight first corner it is quite obvious higher speed will contribute to more accidents as the concertina effect is just exacerbated. Believe faster is better if you wish but if we are to be taken off I would prefer it to be at 20/30mph rather than 50/60mph.

Harking back to how good it was in the past is also pointless. Circuits have changed, karts have changed being wider and made into dodgem cars with plastics and teams/attitudes have definitely changed the sport.

What we need is changes that work for hear and now.

I'm sure most expect in Motorsport a certain number of contacts are inevitable but what is the percentage level karting should be aiming for?

For me your incident percentage should not be more than 8%. i.e. for every three meetings you do which is typically 12 races you will only have contact or incidents spoiling your race once.

Over a season of say 20 club races that is approximately 6.

That's a goal that tracks/clubs/MSA should be aiming for.

To control something first of all you need to be measuring it. Once measured the data should be openly available so that us karting "customers" can decide the tracks we prefer to avoid. This is something the MSA should be providing through their news letter.

If tracks knew there where stats being published then maybe they would try and improve things either by changing the first corner, the speed of starts, driver attitudes, or better clerks.

For most people I would imagine their incident percentage is 25%-40% which is just unacceptable. This is why MSA karting is declining. The ones quitting are being perfectly rationale. Why waste time and effort when it's such a lottery.

Imaginative solutions our required on a variety of fronts such as:

1) Driver training programs/videos showing how to approach the first corner and how to race without contact. Each circuit should have it's own program with emphasis on the issues for that circuit. These videos could be run constantly on practice day with each driver requiring to be "trained" before being allowed to race at the circuit and to give up a practice session say once every 6 months for refresher training.

Some will laugh at this suggestion but this is the type of approach being adopted in construction and other dangerous industries to reduce accident rates and it's working.

2) Standing starts have proved arriving at a tight first corner does lead to less or no incidents.

Clubs should have the option to adopt this.

3) For purists who like rolling starts then why not go single file rather than twin track.

The point is we want to get though the first corner bottleneck safely and then it's race on. If driver's attitude's or first corners can't be changed then this gives everyone 50% more space to work with.
