Well hopefully you will understand what I'm about to say and not misinterpret it as seems to happen to me on Karting1.
It's a question of displacement.
Obviously the lighter float will sit higher in the float bowl and seeing as it is connected to the float arm and needle valve, it has the effect of shutting off the fuel sooner, thus, less fuel in the bowl, you have to remember it's the opposite once the carb is the right way up.
If you remember the old toilet cistern, imagine if you attached a weight to the float, it would sit lower in the water and the water level would rise to a higher level before shutting off the valve, same with the heavier floats.
A similar misconception happens with the float arm height, people set it and forget the when they set it, the carb is upside down. They think that increasing the float arm height will richer the mixture whereas what you are doing is lowering the float arms and reducing the fuel level in the bowl.
I'm not surprised you may have gone slower.
Hope that helps clarify things.
