The TKM Tag debate appears to be a bit of an own goal by Talko. The class is struggling in seniors and strong in juniors so from a business proposition point of view you need to work out where the opportunities lay for Talko to sell the product in volume, if at all.
In juniors the weight of the Tag set up means that unless you are around 50kgs you will struggle to make the gold restrictor which is where the wise money suggests you need to be and even if you can make that your son/daughter probably won’t stay at tat weight for more than a year. The bigger more experienced S1 drivers do seem to make the Blue work unless it is very warm but I am sure they won’t be able to stand the extra 4-6 kgs of the Tag set up, therefore I guess Tag won’t take on in numbers for juniors because of the weight disadvantage unless the is a massive power advantage. If that is the case Talko may have a lot of very dissatisfied customers who may choose to change to something else rather than buy more of their products out of principle.
With regard to seniors, there were 17 at S1 last weekend with around 5 or 6 using the Tag, some of those were “works” drivers so may have hired or been given kit to try so in reality they may have sold 5 or 6 engines if people have bought more than one. The fastest lap in the A final was set on a DD and I think the top 6 was split 50/50 for Tag & DD . Again in seniors there will be some who can’t use the Tag due to weight and others who have invested in good DD motors so the potential customer base is not large .
Overall I think it is good that there is a DD alternative for those who can’t or won’t push and having invested in the Tag Talko have now got it working however in my viewed and based on the above unless they increase the weights in juniors the chances of selling in any volume are poor and if the only way to be competitive is change to the Tag then a lot of the existing customers would chose to go elsewhere simply out of principle.
