You will have to excuse me if some of these questions have been asked numerous times before or sound a bit daft but having recently purchased a second hand Comer W60 ZIP Storm kart for my lad I am fast finding out I need all the advise I can get.

So here goes, when originally bought the kart came with two sealed engines both of which I were told had less than 3 hours run time and had been dyno set on the carb’s which in fairness I do believe was the case. Having attempted to start both engines several times I did finally get them to fire but at tick over both were revving very low and difficult to keep going, which from what I can make out with an experienced driver might not necessarily be an issue. For my novice lad this proved to be problematic, as until his confidence grows he is obviously not giving the engine maximum rev’s and would doubt we are getting engine temps up high enough. I am reluctant to push my lad too hard and risk knocking his confidence with a few crashes. Having read much conflicting advise I decided to tinker with the carb settings setting low jet to 60 minutes and high to 45 minutes which does seem to make the engine far easier to start and less likely to cut out, but now we seem to be having issues with plugs oiling up after very little use. I am running the kart on 200ml of oil to 5 litres of fuel which I believe is the correct ratio hence assume the plugs fouling is a combination of the carb setting and lack of rev’s to get temperatures up to burn oil off quickly enough.

Is there any thing I can do with the engine set up to alleviate this problem whilst my lad builds his confidence to rev the engine higher or is it a case of continually changing plugs, as at this rate I might need to take a bank loan out to fund it. Plugs never seem to work no matter how much I try to clean them once they start oiling up.

Is there any specific start up procedure I should be adopting i.e. do I need to cover the air intake or give it any throttle?

Ultimately it would be my intention to have the engine set on a dyno when my lad is a little more experienced, but would be nice just to get it easily stated and fairly reliable in the interim whilst we practice. Any advise people could give, together with recommendations for trustworthy engine builders would be greatly received.

In addition living in the west midlands can anybody recommend tracks for my lad to build his confidence before going further into joining a kart club. I was originally intending doing this a Priory Park at Tamworth but this has recently closed.

Sorry for all the questions but any advice would be gratefully received.
