I've never quite bought any of the arguments about radical differences in stiffness/handling between hard, medium and soft axles - but the difference in strength is undeniable. Soft axles are much easier bent, and much easier straightened.

0.5 mm run-out is something that I would normally straighten rather than replace. Ideally you want a hydraulic press for this, but I've had to get a bit more creative in the past...
