I agree, it is a great engine and on the whole my lad and I prefer it to the Comer.

I can see where the MSA were coming from regarding the pull start rather than the TAG system - keep it simple.

However, it would appear that inadequate testing was undertaken regarding the material the drum is made out of. Whilst the newer plastic version does seem to be a bit stronger, it still wears like hell where the palls engage.

A newer drum that solves this problem has been promised but has yet to appear. Why can they not replace the plastic with metal (as per the comer starter) ? At present, I am replacing the drum every month to avoid it failing.

I did speak to someone at John Mills last week to see what was going on. They basically suggested that it was my fault that the drum was 'wearing' and that their 'team' had not experienced any problems so far - this is despite my using the correct/advised technique of pulling the engine over until the palls engage and then using a short, firm pull to start it.

It is a shame, because so far the engines seem to be reasonably evenly matched and this problem is discouraging others from taking up the use of what is otherwise a good engine - that is once you get the carb set properly, but that is another story !!!
