At Rissington last weekend - two starters failed at the same time. One apparently destroying the ignition coil in the process.
I now check the starter as part of routine servicing/maintenance.
This weekend (not racing), I stripped the starter to check it - lo and behold, the teeth on the drum were worn where they engage with the pawls. The rope was also frayed where it goes through a small metal washer that I presume is designed to stop the knot in the rope pulling through the handle.
At present, it seems that the plastic starter drum and rope are 'disposable' items. I am now on our third drum.
Surely it is now time for the manufacturers / importers to admit that the design / materials are flawed and replace them with a metal drum (similar to the comer) and let us use better quality rope ?
The added cost and complexity of the TAG system shouldn't be necessary if they can sort out what would appear to be a realtively simple problem to solve.
