Another afternoon of IAME recoil starter failures on Saturday. I noticed pull cord was fraying and took off recoil unit only to find that the plastic cord drum had cracked and was happily shredding the cord. Replaced with second new backup unit - the new cord broke twice once on track restart and on the grid!
Evidently the MSA approved the IAME with a recoil pull starter rather than the US and EU supplied TAG unit, to lower the price - probably by about £200. This has been a major false economy, thus far I have had units off the kart six times and lost about an hours track time, and grid position due to failures, and spent £50 on a backup unit. Every IAME owner appears to experience these failures. I will be writing to the MSA and IAME, as they need to review this situation ASAP - the quality of the units are not up to scratch and are undermining the image of otherwise sound engine. Approving the TAG unit option would be sensible. No one expects to pay £1200 for a new race engine where quality and tolerance testing appears to have been totally absent from the manufacture of the means to start it!
