I keep things simple as far as race starts are concerned and don't worry too much if P2 is ahead at the start line, the race starts at the start signal, not the start line. As long as P2 does not break formation before the race start, all is good. No race start is spot on and P2 is not obligated to be behind P1 once the race has started.
As long as P1 & P2 are more or less inline at the signal to start then its a good start. The more or less is a judgement made by the starting official as it is near impossible to expect them to be exactly inline.
If the starter is a judge of fact for starts then just put it down to experience if you think the start should have been done again.
The MSA, Stewards and CoC will almost always rely on the starters opinion of the race start and will take little regard to any other opinions.
My advice is to know when to protest and when to keep quiet and except what happened and put it down to experience i.e. you have a good chance of winning a protest.
Every time I've protested, the decision went my way because I had a good clear case, there is not point in protesting a lost cause, does not matter if your right or wrong.
