As has been said, it's just removing the variations caused by manufacturing tolerances.

Sadly with sealed classes like rotax, where no machining is allowed, you have to have access to dozens of barrels for example, to find one with the port dimensions as you want them. Hence the talk of engines changing hands for big money.

Whereas, back in the day, when you or your engine builder could machine your 100cc barrel, within the limits of the fische, you could make the barrel supplied with the engine have optimal port heights etc.

Shame they don't allow machining to "Fiche" in the max classes to even things out!
